Consumer Attorney – SCCLS

Full-Time Position | Experienced Consumer Attorney for Leadership or Supervisory Role

South Coastal Counties Legal Services, Inc. (SCCLS), the primary provider of free civil legal aid to low income residents of Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod & the Islands, seeks an Attorney with substantial experience in consumer bankruptcy and other consumer matters to help establish and lead a consumer unit at SCCLS.

The qualified Attorney will work with the organization’s leadership team, a talented advocacy staff, and an engaged statewide advocacy community to strategically address critical consumer matters that contribute to locking residents of our region in poverty. The Attorney will have an excellent opportunity to contribute to the strategic growth of the organization’s advocacy and to creatively address consumer issues facing the region’s low income communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working with the advocacy staff at SCCLS, the Attorney will:

  • Maintain a strategic caseload.
  • Plan and implement a strategic vision for building an effective consumer advocacy unit at SCCLS
  • Effectively engage with the organization’s leadership team, advocacy staff, community groups and organizations, and the statewide justice community to address debt, and/or unfair or fraudulent consumer practices that keep low income families impoverished
  • Develop and promote systems for identifying and providing innovative ways to address systemic barriers faced by clients and client communities.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Admitted to practice in Massachusetts, or able to seek admission
  • At least seven years of experience as a practicing attorney and a substantive expertise in consumer law issues.
  • Significant experience with advocacy in a variety of forums including federal, state, and appellate courts, administrative agencies, and/or legislative bodies.
  • Demonstrated commitment or experience working with diverse communities; experience representing clients who may have experienced poverty, trauma or discrimination
  • A commitment to fostering inclusivity and equity, as well as humility when working with clients, colleagues and in supervising staff.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills that inspire and encourage professional growth in others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated creativity in identifying and pursuing legal issues.
  • Commitment to race equity, anti-racism and economic justice in the workplace and in the provision of legal services; Capacity to facilitate groups and meetings equitably with a framework that embraces race equity principles.
  • Experience working with community groups, organizations, and advocacy groups and utilizing communications strategies to address legal issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and respond to emerging issues and changing policies.
  • Fluency in Portuguese, Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, Arabic or Haitian Creole desirable.
