Staff Attorney – Racial Justice Re-Entry Project – Community Legal Aid

Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts. CLA has a diverse staff of over 100 dedicated and talented people working collaboratively across multiple community-based offices in our service area.

CLA seeks an experienced attorney who will spearhead CLA’s racial justice re-entry project for individuals coming out of incarceration. The Staff Attorney will work out of CLA’s Worcester or Springfield office beginning in the summer of 2019 and will use systemic advocacy and other strategies to ameliorate the adverse civil impacts of criminal records on communities of color. The Staff Attorney will provide legal assistance to individuals who need help sealing, expunging, or correcting their criminal records; have been denied or terminated from affordable housing or public benefits programs; face custody or visitation impediments when trying to build or re-establish family relationships; or face barriers to economic stability due to the imposition of fees and fines. The Staff Attorney will also provide know-your-rights trainings to community members and the groups and agencies assisting them in CLA’s service area.

CLA has an active Diversity and Equity Committee that focuses on community engagement, internal organizational structures, and racial justice advocacy. It is hoped that the Staff Attorney will be an active participant in the Committee’s work.
