Statement by Lonnie A. Powers, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation on Efforts to Reduce Domestic Violence in Massachusetts

BOSTON, April 3, 2014 — “We are heartened by the efforts of state leaders to strengthen the systems we have in place in Massachusetts to assist victims of domestic violence. Civil legal aid attorneys throughout the state assist families affected by domestic violence by enforcing and maintaining protective orders; assisting with divorce, child custody and support; and domestic violence-related legal disputes involving immigration, housing, and public benefits. We know that these efforts provide real, long-term benefits to victims, who are some of the most vulnerable residents of the Commonwealth. We welcome efforts that will support this work and help victims of domestic violence obtain justice.”
